Mount Baker is the short steep hike rising from the eastern edge of the village. The summit at 2,452 feet is reached by a 1.8-mile round trip with about 900 feet of climb — a serious workout but well within reach for anyone of moderate fitness. The trailhead sits about a mile from the centre of the village, easy biking distance or a 20-minute walk.
The view from the top is one of the best short-hike payoffs in the central Adirondacks: Lake Flower below, Mt. McKenzie and Whiteface to the east, the McKenzie range to the north, and a long view across the Saranac Lakes chain to the west. Cell coverage is good. The trail is well-marked and busy on summer weekends; for solitude, go early or in shoulder seasons.
