Asheville Art Museum

The Asheville Art Museum reopened in 2019 after a major renovation that doubled its size. It occupies the old Pack Memorial Library on Pack Square and now has airy modern galleries on three levels plus a rooftop terrace. The permanent collection focuses on American art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with a strong sub-collection of work from Black Mountain College — the experimental school that briefly operated nearby and counted Robert Rauschenberg, Josef Albers, and Cy Twombly as faculty or students.

It is a manageable size — you can see most of it in ninety minutes — and the rotating exhibitions in the front galleries are usually worth a look. The rooftop has a great view back into the city.
