Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) is fifteen minutes south of downtown and is served by direct flights from about twenty US cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, New York LaGuardia, and Newark. It is the easiest option but fares are not always cheap.
Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) is two and a quarter hours east by road and has a much wider international and domestic network; it is the better choice for travellers from outside the United States. Greenville-Spartanburg in South Carolina (about an hour south) and Knoxville in Tennessee (under two hours west) are alternatives.
Asheville is not on a passenger rail line — Amtrak's Crescent line runs east of here through Greensboro. Greyhound and FlixBus run direct buses from Charlotte, Atlanta, Knoxville, and a few other cities. Most visitors arrive by car, often via I-40 from the east or I-26 from the south.
