Black Mountain College Museum

Black Mountain College ran for just twenty-three years, between 1933 and 1957, in a few buildings outside town. In that short window its faculty and students included Josef and Anni Albers, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Buckminster Fuller, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Willem de Kooning. The college had no exams, no grades, and a curriculum centred on the arts. It went bankrupt and closed.

The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, in a storefront just off Pack Square, keeps that legacy alive. The small permanent display tells the college's story, and the rotating exhibitions show work by former students, faculty, or contemporary artists in conversation with the college's ideas. Admission is low and the staff are knowledgeable.
