Pack Square is the central square of downtown Asheville and the natural starting point for a walk. It is named after George Willis Pack, a lumber baron who funded the original library here in the 1890s, and it has been the centre of civic life for more than a century. The art deco Asheville City Hall and the neighbouring Buncombe County Courthouse face each other across the eastern end of the park.
The park has been redesigned several times and now combines fountains, public sculpture, and grassy terraces. Buskers play here most afternoons and free concerts fill the evenings in summer. The 65-foot Vance Monument stood at the western end from 1898 until it was dismantled in 2021, leaving a bare plinth still visible today.
