Duke East Campus

Duke's East Campus — the original Trinity College, founded in 1838 — sits about a mile east of the more famous West Campus and feels markedly different. The architecture is red-brick Georgian rather than Gothic limestone, the lawns are open and welcoming, and the 1.5-mile gravel loop around the perimeter is a Durham institution for joggers and dog-walkers.

It is the freshman campus for all undergraduates, so it has a livelier student presence than the West Campus during the academic year. Visitors should walk in to see the Duke East Quad (the academic centre), the small Carr Building, and the East Duke Building, the original university administration block. From there, Ninth Street is two minutes' walk west.
