In a quiet corner of Northgate Park, in north-central Durham, a long-necked dinosaur sculpture peeks out from among the trees beside the small creek that runs through the park. The whimsical wooden-and-metal Apatosaurus was built by local artists and has become an unofficial neighbourhood mascot — children love it, and most visiting adults have to be tipped off by a local before they find it.
The park itself is otherwise an unassuming neighbourhood green with a small playground, sports fields, and walking paths along Ellerbe Creek. It is a fifteen-minute drive from downtown; well worth a short detour if you happen to be heading north of the city.
