Stamey's Barbecue

Pit-cooked Lexington-style pork shoulder, in business since 1930

Stamey's has been smoking pork shoulders over hickory and oak coals since 1930 and the formula has not changed much. Lexington-style barbecue — chopped or sliced pork shoulder, with a thin tomato-and-vinegar dip rather than the eastern North Carolina vinegar-only sauce — comes on a tray with hush puppies, slaw made with red dip, and sweet tea.

The original location on West Gate City Boulevard, across from the Coliseum, is the one to visit; the wood smoke from the pit is part of the experience. Cash and card both accepted. Closed Sunday.
