Hanging Rock State Park — An hour and a half north of Greensboro, Hanging Rock offers rocky mountain trails, boating, fishing, and swimming. Rowboats and canoes are available to rent. The hiking is excellent but wear proper footwear — the trails are rocky and uneven.
Mount Airy — Just over an hour north-west, Mount Airy is the town where Andy Griffith grew up and the inspiration for Mayberry. Whether or not you are a fan of the show, the small-town charm is genuine. Main Street has quaint shops and cafes, and the mountain backdrop is beautiful.
Old Stone Winery — About an hour south in Salisbury, this working winery grows its own grapes and offers tastings and tours. Open Tuesday through Saturday 11am–6pm, Sunday 1pm–5pm.
