Winston-Salem's food scene has grown alongside the Innovation Quarter and the downtown arts crowd. The Tavern in Old Salem is the traditional choice — slow-cooked pot roast and Moravian chicken pie served in an 18th-century stagecoach inn. Downtown, Mozelle's does inventive southern cooking with a strong vegetable side game, and Sweet Potatoes in the Arts District is the city's most-cited soul-food restaurant.
For barbecue, Little Richard's off Country Club Road serves textbook North Carolina pulled pork with a vinegar-based sauce. The downtown brunch crowd splits between Mary's Gourmet Diner (eccentric and beloved) and Camino Bakery (excellent pastries and the city's best espresso). Don't leave without a sugar cake from Winkler Bakery and a hot original from the Stratford Road Krispy Kreme.
