God's Acre

God's Acre is the Moravian cemetery just north of Old Salem — long, level, and unlike any other graveyard in America. The Moravians believed all souls are equal in death, so every gravestone is identical: a flat marble slab roughly 50 cm square, laid flush with the ground. Burials are arranged not by family but by "choir" — single brothers, single sisters, married couples — and within each section, simply in the order people died.

The cemetery is best known for the Easter Sunrise Service, an unbroken tradition since 1772, when several thousand worshippers gather in the dark and the Moravian brass band plays as the sun rises over the headstones. At any time of year, a quiet walk along the central avenue is a striking experience.
