Tanglewood is a 1,200-acre former Reynolds family estate west of town, deeded to Forsyth County in 1951 as a public park. It has a lake, two golf courses (one of them PGA-grade), an equestrian centre, an arboretum and a generous network of walking and cycling trails. There is even a small steeplechase track that runs an annual meet in May.
In December the park hosts the Festival of Lights, one of the largest drive-through holiday light displays in the United States — over a million lights across a four-mile loop. A pleasant half-day escape from downtown, easy to combine with a stop in Old Salem.
