The Fargo Theatre is the most beautiful building on Broadway, a 1926 Art Moderne picture palace with a neon marquee that lights up the street at night in a satisfyingly old-fashioned way. The interior — with its vaulted lobby, ornate plasterwork, and original projection booth — is remarkably well-preserved. The theatre screens independent and classic films, and its programming is genuinely good: a mix of foreign films, documentaries, revival screenings, and the occasional mainstream art house release.
It is also one of the last single-screen movie theatres operating in North Dakota, which gives it a quiet civic importance beyond its architectural merit. If anything good is screening, this is a fine place to spend an evening in Fargo.
