Painted Canyon Overlook

The Painted Canyon Overlook sits directly off Interstate 94 about seven miles east of Medora and offers the most dramatic first look at the Badlands that you will get without paying a park fee. Walk from the parking lot to the rim and the country drops away into a chaos of striped buttes, red-baked claystone, and sage flats.

A small visitor centre on the rim has restrooms, a bookshop, and rangers happy to suggest routes. A short loop trail and a longer 4-mile out-and-back drop into the canyon for those who want to feel the scale rather than admire it from the safety of the rim. Free, open seasonally — usually April through October.
