When to Go

Medora is a summer town. The Medora Musical, the Chateau de Mores tours, most restaurants, and most of the park's services run between mid-May and mid-September, with peak crowds in July and August. Spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) offer cooler hiking weather, fewer cars on the park's loop road, and slightly cheaper rooms.

Winter is dramatic but unforgiving. Daytime highs sit well below freezing for months, and a wind that has crossed half a continent reaches the badlands with nothing to slow it down. The park stays open but most facilities shut, and Medora itself goes quiet — fewer than two hundred people live here year-round.
