Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum

Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the finest Victorian garden cemeteries in the United States, spread across 733 acres of carefully maintained landscape in northern Cincinnati. The grounds are a genuine arboretum, with thousands of labelled specimen trees and shrubs, and the lake system and rolling topography make it more park-like than most city parks.

The cemetery has been a public walking destination since it opened in 1845, and the tradition continues — joggers, dog walkers, and people looking for a quiet half hour all use it alongside the actual mourners. Notable monuments include the James N. Gamble mausoleum (the Procter & Gamble co-founder), an extraordinary Egyptian Revival gate, and a cast-iron Civil War memorial. Entry is free during daylight hours; a self-guided walking map is available at the office near the main gate.

A story
Spring Grove Cemetery was designed in 1845 by landscape architect Howard Daniels, who deliberately modelled it on the English naturalistic garden tradition rather than the formal grid cemetery. The result looks more like a private park than a burial ground — 733 acres of rolling hills, ornamental lakes, specimen trees, and Victorian funerary architecture. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1994.
