Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge protects a large stretch of Lake Erie marsh, wet meadow, and diked impoundments west of Port Clinton. It is one of the best birding areas in northwest Ohio, especially during spring migration when warblers, shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors move through the lakefront corridor.
The refuge is not built around spectacle in the theme-park sense. Its rewards are slower: driving the wildlife loop when it is open, scanning pools from observation points, and walking short trails through marsh and woodland edges. Bring binoculars, insect repellent in warm months, and patience.
