McAlester's food scene is shaped by its Italian heritage. Coal-mining immigrants from Calabria, Sicily, and northern Italy settled here and in the neighbouring village of Krebs in the 1880s and 1890s, and their descendants run several of the longest-lived restaurants in Oklahoma. A meal at one of the old Italian places is the main reason to plan a stop.
