Lake Thunderbird State Park

A 24-square-kilometre reservoir 20 km east of Norman, set in the rolling cross-timbers forest of central Oklahoma. The lake was dammed in 1965 to provide Norman, Midwest City, and Del City with drinking water; the surrounding state park covers around 7,000 acres with two campgrounds, a marina, swimming beaches, fishing piers, and a network of cycling and equestrian trails.

The lake is the closest serious outdoor space to Norman and a popular weekend escape: kayaking, paddle-boarding, fishing for largemouth bass and white crappie, and birdwatching in the protected bays at the south end. The Clear Bay nature centre on the north shore has trail maps and a small wildlife display. Park entrance is free; camping and marina fees apply.
