Nic's Grill

A tiny burger counter in Midtown with about a dozen stools and a small parking lot full of cars at lunchtime. The burger here is one of the best in the city — a hand-formed patty smashed onto the flat-top grill, cooked until the edges crisp, dressed with mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle on a soft bun. Add cheese, bacon, or chilli; do not bother adding anything more elaborate.

Lunch only (closes at 2pm), closed Sundays and Mondays. Cash strongly preferred. Get there early — queues form by 11.30 — and resign yourself to eating with your elbows tucked in. Worth it.
