Ojai

Small Ventura County valley town with an artsy centre, mountain trails, citrus groves, and nearby Lake Casitas.

Ojai sits in a warm inland valley behind Ventura, close enough to the Pacific to feel coastal but ringed by dry Southern California hills. It is small, walkable, and a little self-conscious, with Spanish-style arcades, galleries, farmers-market energy, and a long tradition of weekend escape.

The town itself is not packed with monuments. The appeal is the mix: a slow downtown, the Ojai Valley Museum, good casual food, and the mountain edge of Los Padres National Forest just north of town. West of the valley, Lake Casitas adds water, birdlife, and a broader outdoor day.

Ojai is best as a one-day detour from Ventura or Santa Barbara rather than a checklist destination. Walk the centre, eat well, drive or hike toward the hills, and stay for the late light on the Topatopa Mountains if the weather is clear.

Bars and Cafes

Ojai's drinking scene leans toward wine, patios, and slow evenings rather than late-night bars.
