Bike Path Network

Sunriver has roughly 55 kilometres of paved bike paths that loop through the entire community. The paths are completely separated from car traffic, which makes them genuinely pleasant rather than just usable — you can put children on bikes and let them go. The network connects the resort facilities, the nature centre, the marina, and most of the residential areas.

Bike rental is available at several locations including the SHARC (Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center) and shops along the village centre. Cruiser bikes and single-speed comfort cycles are most common; the terrain is flat throughout. In summer the paths are busy but never unpleasant. In spring and autumn, when the vacation crowds thin, they are largely empty. The most scenic sections run near the Deschutes River at the western edge of the resort.

A story
Sunriver's paths were laid out in the early 1970s when the resort was first developed on the site of the wartime Camp Abbot. The planners made a deliberate decision to keep most internal streets off-limits to through traffic, which is why it remains possible today to ride from one end of the community to the other without crossing a single car road.
