Oregon Observatory

The Oregon Observatory is the public astronomy facility of the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory. It sits at the edge of the resort community, just far enough from the street lights to take real advantage of Central Oregon's famously clear skies. The main telescope is a 0.7-metre (28-inch) reflector, one of the largest dedicated to public viewing in the Pacific Northwest.

Evening public programmes run most nights from late spring through early autumn. Visitors pay a modest entry fee and rotate through indoor planetarium-style presentations, outdoor laser-guided constellation tours, and time at the eyepiece. Staff are enthusiastic and will explain what you are looking at. Arrive early in summer — it fills up fast, and the sessions are capped. Check the website for the current schedule; winter hours are limited.

A story
The observatory sits at roughly 1,350 metres elevation on the eastern side of the Cascades, where clear nights outnumber cloudy ones by a wide margin. On summer evenings the staff wheel out a fleet of telescopes on the lawn and let visitors queue up to look — Jupiter's cloud bands, the rings of Saturn, and the Milky Way are all routine sights here that are invisible from Portland or Eugene.
