Deschutes River Float

The Deschutes River forms the western boundary of Sunriver, and the float from Sunriver Marina down to Benham Falls — or the gentler stretch from the marina to Meadow Picnic Area — is the most popular summer activity in the area. The water emerges from springs and lava tubes upstream, staying cold and clear even in August. Tubes and kayaks are available at the marina; the lazy float takes one to two hours depending on the put-in point.

The Spring River, a short spring-fed tributary that enters the Deschutes near the south end of the resort, is worth seeking out for its unusual clarity. The water is cold enough in summer to keep the swimming brief, but the emerald colour is striking. For a longer paddle, outfitters in the marina can set up multi-day float trips further downstream into the Deschutes canyon. Fishing is productive throughout the river; the area is a popular destination for fly-fishing guided tours.
