Allentown is the largest city in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, a place with old manufacturing bones, a revived downtown arena district, and a surprising Revolutionary War footnote. It is not as polished as Philadelphia or as postcard-pretty as some small Pennsylvania towns, but it has enough museums, parks, and working-city texture to reward a stop.
The city's best-known family draw is Dorney Park, just west of town. Downtown, the Allentown Art Museum, Miller Symphony Hall, and the Liberty Bell Museum make a compact cultural loop around Hamilton Street.
Allentown works well as a Lehigh Valley base if you have a car. Bethlehem and Easton are close, Philadelphia is day-trip distance, and the old canal, steel, and rail landscapes nearby give the region more character than the highway exits suggest.
