Longland (Margaret Mead Farmstead)

Historic farmstead near Holicong where Margaret Mead spent her childhood summers

Longland is an 18th-century farmstead near Holicong in Buckingham Township, on the National Register of Historic Places. The property passed through several distinguished hands over the centuries, but it is best known as the childhood summer retreat of Margaret Mead, the American anthropologist who became one of the most famous scientists of the twentieth century.

The farmhouse is privately owned and not open to visitors, but the property is visible from the road and the historic buildings — stone house, bank barn, outbuildings — are largely intact. For anyone interested in the history of American intellectual life, it is worth a slow drive past on the back roads between Holicong and Lahaska.

A story
Margaret Mead, the anthropologist whose 1928 book Coming of Age in Samoa reshaped how the Western world thought about culture and adolescence, spent her childhood summers at Longland. She later wrote that it was here, on the Bucks County farmland, that she developed her lifelong habit of careful observation — watching how people in small communities organised their lives.
