State Theatre

A 1500-seat former vaudeville house on Northampton Street, restored and operating as a non-profit performing-arts centre since 1990. The interior is the Mediterranean-Revival fantasy of the 1926 originals: blue plaster ceiling sky, fake Moorish balconies, painted clouds drifting overhead. It is one of the better preserved 1920s movie palaces in eastern Pennsylvania.

Programming runs from touring Broadway productions to country acts, comedy, and a busy classic-film series. Even if nothing is playing the night you are in town, a quick look at the lobby from Northampton Street is worth doing.
