Larry Holmes Statue

A bronze of heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes stands on the Lehigh River boardwalk that bears his name, gloves up in mid-jab, on the waterfront a short walk from Centre Square. Holmes was born and raised in Easton, and the surrounding patch of riverside — the Larry Holmes Drive boardwalk — is one of the more pleasant strolls in town, with views across the Delaware into Phillipsburg, New Jersey.

The boardwalk leads down to the confluence with the Delaware and the start of the Lehigh towpath, making for an easy 30-minute loop combined with the canal museum.

A story
Holmes — "The Easton Assassin" — defended the WBC heavyweight title twenty times between 1978 and 1985, the second-longest title reign in heavyweight history. After retirement he stayed in Easton, opened a restaurant and several businesses on the waterfront, and helped fund the boulevard now named for him. The statue was unveiled in 2008.
