The Erie Maritime Museum tells the story of the Battle of Lake Erie and the naval history of the Great Lakes, but its main attraction floats just outside: the US Brig Niagara, a faithfully reconstructed 1813 warship that was Perry's flagship for the decisive battle of the War of 1812. The Niagara serves as Pennsylvania's official flagship and sails on the Great Lakes during summer; when in port, visitors can board and tour the ship.
The museum itself covers the naval engagement in detail, with artifacts from the original battle, ship models, and exhibits on the maritime trade that shaped the region. The waterfront setting — with views of the lake and the harbour — adds to the atmosphere. Sailing excursions on the Niagara are offered when she is in port; check the schedule in advance.
