Erie Zoo

The Erie Zoo covers 15 acres in the south of the city and houses around 500 animals representing more than 100 species. It is a well-maintained regional zoo with a particular strength in African savanna animals and a strong conservation education programme. The zoo operates a botanical garden alongside the animal exhibits and has regular seasonal events including a popular winter light display.

This is primarily a family-oriented destination and is best visited as a half-day outing. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Admission charged; reduced rates for children.

A story
The zoo's original collection in the 1920s included animals donated by local residents — including, reportedly, a bear that someone had been keeping as a pet. The institution has grown considerably since then, but it retains the community-oriented character of a regional zoo that knows its audience well.
