Demuth Museum

The Demuth Museum occupies the former home and studio of the American Modernist painter Charles Demuth, half a block from Central Market on East King Street. Demuth was born in this building in 1883 and produced most of his major work in the small studio at the back of the house. The conservatory garden, where he often painted his still lifes, is preserved at the rear.

The collection is modest — a handful of Demuth originals plus rotating exhibitions of contemporary art on paper — but the rooms themselves are the real attraction. Free admission and rarely crowded. Allow 45 minutes.

A story
Charles Demuth's I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold, painted in this very studio in 1928, was an act of devotion to his friend William Carlos Williams's poem 'The Great Figure.' Williams had seen a fire engine with a gold 5 race past him in New York; Demuth made it into one of the defining paintings of American Modernism.
