The classic Lancaster day trip is the Amish country east of the city — Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Strasburg, Paradise — small towns surrounded by working Amish and Mennonite farms. Buggies on the back roads, hand-lettered signs for fresh eggs and quilts, one-room schoolhouses still in use. Lititz, half an hour north, is a small Moravian town with its own pretzel and chocolate heritage and one of the prettiest main streets in the state.
