Lancaster's compact downtown rewards a slow walk. Penn Square anchors the city, with Central Market and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at its center and the Fulton Opera House a block away. The blocks of Queen Street, Prince Street, and King Street are filled with red-brick row houses, Federal and Victorian storefronts, art galleries, and small museums.
Most of the worthwhile sights are within a 15-minute walk of the market. James Buchanan's home at Wheatland sits a little further out in the western neighbourhoods, but a short drive or bus ride reaches it easily.
