Moravian Church

The Moravian Church on East Main Street, built in 1787, is the spiritual centre of the town the Moravians founded. The building is plain by the standards of contemporary American Protestant architecture — symmetrical brick, a simple white interior, no altar, traditional separate doors for men and women — but the simplicity is itself the point.

Sunday services and the famous Moravian "lovefeast" (a communion-like service involving sweet buns and coffee) are open to visitors. The church complex includes the older Brethren's House and Sisters' House, where unmarried members lived communally in the 18th century, and the small Moravian cemetery (God's Acre), where graves are arranged by sex and age rather than family.
