The Broken Boot Gold Mine, on the western edge of town, was a working hardrock mine from 1878 to 1904 and now runs guided tours through the tunnels. The visit lasts about forty-five minutes, takes you a few hundred feet underground and gives a reasonable feel for the cramped, candle-lit conditions miners worked in for ten-hour shifts.
Hard hats are provided, the temperature underground hovers around 47°F year round, and the tour ends with a panning demonstration in the stream outside. It is family-friendly, mildly hokey and an easy add-on to a day in town.
