The Days of '76 Museum, on the north side of town next to the rodeo grounds, holds one of the finest collections of horse-drawn vehicles in the West — more than fifty wagons, stagecoaches, freight wagons and carriages, including a Deadwood Stage that ran between here and Cheyenne. The collection grew out of the annual Days of '76 rodeo and parade, held every July since 1924, and is the museum's reason for existing.
There are also good rooms on Plains Indian material culture, frontier weapons and the costumes worn in the rodeo over the decades. It's a much quieter visit than the Main Street attractions and rewards an unhurried hour or two.
