Day Trips

The Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, 90 minutes south, is the most popular day trip — the oldest registered distillery in the US, free to tour, and situated in a dry county, which is its own joke. Land Between the Lakes, a 170,000-acre national recreation area straddling Tennessee and Kentucky (about 90 miles northwest), has hiking, an elk and bison prairie, and a planetarium. Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga (just over two hours southeast) offers views over seven states, Ruby Falls underground waterfall, and the Incline Railway — the world's steepest passenger railway.
