Station Inn

The Station Inn is a 1974 concrete-block building on 12th Avenue South — the lone hold-out of old, low-rise Nashville completely surrounded by the Gulch's glass towers. Inside, the room is small, dark, and acoustically perfect; the stage is six inches off the floor and the seats are red-vinyl chairs at small tables. Bluegrass, country, and Americana, almost every night, year-round.

Cash only, no reservations except for premium tables on certain Saturday nights; arrive early to get a seat. The kitchen runs a small menu of frozen pizzas and beer. The Time Jumpers, a Western swing band featuring Vince Gill, play most Monday nights and have made the Inn an internationally known destination. One of the best music venues in the country.

A story
The Station Inn is the world centre of bluegrass — Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, and every important figure in the genre has played the small stage here. Bobby Hicks, the long-time Monroe fiddler, played his last public show at the Inn at the age of 90.
