Denton

North Texas college town with a courthouse square, live music, and a strong festival calendar.

Denton sits north of Dallas and Fort Worth, where I-35 splits toward the two cities. It is part college town, part county seat, and part small music city, with the University of North Texas giving the place more creative energy than its suburban edge suggests.

The courthouse square is the easiest place to start. The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum anchors the centre of town, with old houses, galleries, shops, and music venues nearby. Denton is best when it is making noise: the One O'Clock Lab Band gives the city a serious jazz claim, while the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival turns that reputation into a big spring weekend.

This is not a classic sightseeing town, and it is not worth crossing Texas for on its own. But if you are already in North Texas, Denton rewards a spare day with a walkable square, local history, student-town food and drink, and a music scene that feels genuinely local.
