Corpus Christi

South Texas bay city of beaches, ships, Selena memories, and barrier-island wind.

Corpus Christi is the big city of the Texas Coastal Bend, wrapped around a wide bay and pushed constantly by Gulf wind. It is part port, part beach base, part working South Texas city, and it feels very different from the polished resort towns farther up the coast.

The easiest first stop is North Beach, where the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium sit almost side by side. Downtown has the bayfront seawall, Mirador de la Flor, and a cluster of museums that are worth a half-day if the weather turns sticky.

The beaches are the real reason many Texans come. North Beach is convenient but urban; Mustang Island State Park and Padre Island National Seashore give you the long, open Gulf Coast version. Expect wind, salt, pelicans, pickups on the sand, and a practical beach culture rather than resort polish.

Corpus Christi is also the gateway to Port Aransas, Rockport, and the Laguna Madre. A car is close to essential: distances are large, public transit is limited, and the best nature lies beyond the compact downtown grid.
