Museum of Fine Arts Houston

The largest art museum in the American southwest — over 70,000 works spanning 6,000 years

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) is the largest art museum in the American south, occupying multiple buildings on Bissonnet Street in the Museum District connected by an underground tunnel designed by Isamu Noguchi. The permanent collection spans 6,000 years and 70,000 works, with particular strength in American art, Latin American art, decorative arts, and photography.

The Nancy and Rich Kinder Building (opened 2020), designed by Steven Holl, houses the international modern and contemporary collection in dramatic gallery spaces — it is among the best museum buildings completed in the United States in recent years. The adjacent Glassell School of Art and the Bayou Bend Collection (historic American decorative arts in a separate mansion nearby) extend the MFAH's scope considerably. General admission is free on Thursdays; otherwise expect to pay around $20 for adults.
