Capt. Charles Schreiner Mansion

An 1879 Second Empire Victorian mansion built by the man who put Kerrville on the map

Address 226 Earl Garrett St, Kerrville, TX 78028

The Schreiner Mansion stands downtown as a reminder that the Hill Country had its own version of Gilded Age wealth. Built in 1879 in the Second Empire Victorian style — a mansard roof, decorative ironwork, and a scale that looks completely improbable in a frontier ranching town — it was commissioned by Capt. Charles Schreiner, the merchant and rancher who dominated Kerrville's economy for half a century. It is now a Texas Historical Landmark.

The exterior is the main draw, and you can view it easily from the street. The building's unlikely grandeur, set against the limestone storefronts of the Hill Country commercial district, says something true about the ambitions and contradictions of late-19th-century Texas. Interior access varies depending on current use.

A story
Charles Schreiner arrived in Texas as a French immigrant, fought for the Confederacy as a teenager, then built a fortune in wool, mohair, banking, and cattle. By the 1880s he controlled much of Kerr County's economy and was one of the wealthiest men in the Hill Country. He served as a kind of informal bank and credit system for surrounding ranchers for decades, at one point carrying so many accounts that he effectively kept the region solvent through multiple downturns. Schreiner University nearby bears his name, funded by a land grant from his estate.
