The Texas Hill Country wine region has expanded dramatically over the past two decades and now has more than a hundred wineries, most of them clustered around Fredericksburg about 45 minutes east of Kerrville. The climate — warm days, cool nights, thin limestone soils — suits varieties like Tempranillo, Viognier, and Mourvèdre, and the best producers have moved well past the novelty stage into making genuinely serious wine.
A day trip to Fredericksburg and the Hwy 290 corridor will give you more tasting rooms than you can reasonably visit in an afternoon. A few wineries are closer to Kerrville itself, including some on rural roads south of town. The region is busiest on weekends in spring and fall; if you want to talk to the winemakers rather than wait in tasting-room lines, a weekday visit makes a noticeable difference.
