Kerrville's appeal is built around the Guadalupe River and the rolling Hill Country surrounding it. The river is the center of outdoor life — tubing, swimming, and kayaking in summer, with Kerrville-Schreiner Park giving it a proper riverside base with trails and camping. In town, the Museum of Western Art punches above its weight for a small city, and the Capt. Charles Schreiner Mansion is an unexpectedly grand piece of Victorian architecture in the middle of the Hill Country. Each spring the Kerrville Folk Festival draws performers and listeners from across the country to a riverside ranch just south of town. The surrounding countryside offers wineries, deer ranches, and scenic drives that could fill several days.
