Kilgore

East Texas oil town whose downtown derricks recall the 1930s boom.

Kilgore is an East Texas town in the pine woods south of Longview, best known for the East Texas Oil Field. The city still wears that history openly: downtown derricks, oil-boom stories, and the excellent East Texas Oil Museum make the 1930s feel close.

This is not a big-ticket destination, but it has a clear identity. The World's Richest Acre Park marks the dense cluster of wells that once produced an astonishing amount of oil from a tiny patch of downtown land. Kilgore College adds another local point of pride through the Rangerettes, the first precision dance-drill team.

Kilgore works best as a short stop on an East Texas drive, especially if you are interested in oil history, small-town downtowns, or the piney stretch between Tyler, Longview, and Shreveport.

Things to Do

Kilgore's main sights are tied to the East Texas oil boom. The museum gives the fuller story; the downtown derricks and World's Richest Acre Park show how visible that story still is.
