The American Windmill Museum takes a plain piece of rural machinery and gives it room to become interesting. Rows of windmills show how farmers and ranchers pulled water and power out of a hard, windy landscape long before modern turbines made wind energy fashionable.
It is especially good paired with the National Ranching Heritage Center. Together they explain why wind is not background weather in West Texas, but part of the working system that made settlement possible.
