Logan Canyon

Logan Canyon is a 40-mile stretch of US-89 east of Logan that cuts through the Bear River Range, rising from the Cache Valley to Logan Summit and descending to Bear Lake. The drive alone is excellent — sheer limestone cliffs, the Logan River running beside the road, and the canyon walls closing in as you ascend. Multiple trailheads give access to hikes of all difficulties.

The canyon offers year-round activities: fishing the Logan River for brown and rainbow trout, hiking to Tony Grove Lake and Naomi Peak in summer, and skiing at Beaver Mountain in winter. The canyon also contains Ricks Spring, a karst spring that emerges from a cave in the canyon wall with dramatically clear water — a short stop worth making. Camping is available at several Forest Service campgrounds along the canyon road.

A story
Logan Canyon was designated a National Scenic Byway, and it earns the title in all four seasons: brilliant autumn colour in September and October when maples turn the cliff faces red and orange, winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, spring wildflowers, and summer hiking through limestone formations to alpine lakes. The canyon has been carved by the Logan River over millions of years to a depth of over 2,000 feet.
