Snowbasin Resort

Snowbasin is a serious mountain — 3,000 vertical feet, 3,000 acres, and remarkably uncrowded by ski-resort standards because it does not have on-mountain accommodation and the surrounding real estate remains undeveloped. That means most days you will not wait more than a few minutes for a lift. The terrain ranges from groomed cruisers to genuine expert runs in the Strawberry and Wildcat bowls.

The drive up Snowbasin Road from Ogden Valley is part of the appeal — a winding ascent through aspens and pines with the Ogden River below. Summer brings mountain biking, hiking, and a gondola ride with panoramic views across the Wasatch Mountains and out toward the Great Salt Lake. A half-day here in any season is time well spent.

A story
Snowbasin hosted the downhill, super-G, and combined events at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The organizers built three ornate day lodges for the Games — the Needles, Strawberry, and John Paul lodges — which are still in use today and remain among the finest ski lodges in the United States by any measure.
