Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University is the largest religious university in the United States, enrolling over 30,000 students from across the country and the world. The campus sits on the lower slopes of the Wasatch Mountains above downtown Provo, with views across the valley that are hard to beat. It is an impeccably maintained campus with a noticeable atmosphere — quiet, purposeful, and very, very sober.

The BYU Museum of Art is one of the best art museums in Utah, with a strong collection of 19th- and 20th-century American and European work. The Museum of Peoples and Cultures covers anthropology and archaeology with particular strength in Mesoamerican and American Southwest collections. Both are free to the public and open to all visitors.

A story
BYU has no bars anywhere on campus and no coffee shops — the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Word of Wisdom prohibits alcohol and caffeine. Students sign a strict honor code covering not just substance use but dress, dating, and housing arrangements. Despite this, BYU consistently ranks among the most competitive universities in the western United States for admissions.
