Mount Timpanogos

Mount Timpanogos rises to 11,752 feet directly above Provo and is one of the most-climbed peaks in Utah. The standard route via Timpooneke or the Aspen Grove trailhead is a strenuous 15–17 mile round trip with about 4,900 feet of elevation gain — a full-day undertaking for fit hikers. The rewards are significant: glacier-carved cirques, wildflower meadows in summer, and summit views over Utah Lake, Provo, and the Wasatch chain in both directions.

The peak holds a small permanent glacier — one of the few in Utah. Snow lingers in the upper cirque well into summer. The best window for the hike is late July through September, after the snow has cleared but before autumn storms arrive.

A story
The Timpanogos Hike has been so popular for so long that it developed its own tradition: the Timp Hike, held annually since 1912, draws thousands of hikers who start at midnight to summit by dawn. At its peak in the 1950s, over 10,000 people would participate. The Forest Service eventually had to limit attendance to prevent environmental damage to the summit area.
